In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brother Ron Macdonald on May 12, 2012.  Ron was a respected and valued member of the Operating Engineers, who dedicated much of his life to the trade.   He further went on to serve the membership as a Union Representative, President and Business
Manager.   The Local will deeply mourn his loss.

Northern Gateway – Your Support Counts!

This pipeline is critical for the continued prosperity of Alberta and will bring work opportunities to our members. Without the increased transportation space for the oil that is going to be produced in the upcoming projects, they will be at risk of being cancelled. The jobs for our members are not just from the initial construction, but also from the ongoing mining, infrastructure and maintenance work from these projects.

It is forecasted that the Northern Gateway project will have an enormous impact on Canada’s economy, as it will provide a vital link between the third-largest petroleum reserves and the fastest-growing energy markets in the world.  As a result, Northern Gateway will literally bring thousands of jobs to our members in Alberta, BC and to the rest of Canada.  This initiative will provide economic and strategic benefits for Canada that will be enjoyed by our members and their families for generations to come.

Although the Northern Gateway project has come under scrutiny and much opposition, support for the project continues to grow.  As such, it is imperative for our members to provide their supportive comments directly to the Joint Review Panel (JRP) of the Enbridge Gateway Pipeline.  The more supportive comments received, the better, as the JRP will only make their decision on the public record.

Please go to the website shown below and register your support to bring work opportunities to Alberta and help Canada take this important step towards joining the Global Energy Market.

In solidarity,

Bruce Moffatt, Business Manager/Financial Secretary

Bill C-377

Under this Bill, every Labour Union in Canada will be required to file a standard set of financial statements each year.  Details from those statements will be posted on a public website for all Canadians to examine.  The public will be allowed to gauge the effectiveness, financial integrity and health of Canada’s Unions.  While transparency is good, only Labour Unions are being targeted with this legislation.  Medical Associations, Law Associations and other professional associations are left out of Bill C-377.

What does this mean to Labour Unions across Canada?

  • This Bill undermines the rights that Canadian citizens and residents have in our country; the right of association; the right to privacy; and the right to freedom of speech within the right of association.
  • It is not about accountability and transparency; it is about ideology, and is a direct strike on the labour movement in Canada.
  • This type of attack on Unions was started in the U.S., where it has been expanded on over the years and helped foster a dramatic decline in Union strength and participation.
  • In terms of what is being required of unions to report, it would increase dramatically the amount of reporting unions would need to do.  This would increase the time and effort required to prepare the reports and would take additional resources, both financial and manpower, to do so.
  • Private information may be obtained and used extensively by large corporations against the labour movement, such as countering organizing activities of the labour unions that might be trying to organize their work force or the collective bargaining process.

This Bill is bad for our business, bad for our industry, and bad for the economy! We need your help to keep the major projects we are working towards on track and that this unnecessary government regulation not only wastes tax dollars but doesn’t solve any problem that currently exists.

Take a look through the myths and facts sheet regarding Bill C-377 and take ACTION!

How can you take ACTION?

  • Call your MP today!  Let them know that this Bill is bad for business and bad for the work we are trying to do to help the government get
    the economy back on track.
  • Visit www.workersbuildcanada.ca   This takes only a minute, costs you nothing and will be extremely helpful in getting our message out to the government.
